MIAMI BEACH, FL (NOVEMBER 14, 2006)-The Wolfsonian-Florida International University will host the biannual meeting of the Association of Research Institutes in Art History (ARIAH) November 16-18. The museum and research center is located at 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach.

ARIAH supports new initiatives that promote art historical research throughout the world. Each of the twenty-two member institutions offers fellowship opportunities for advanced research in the history of art and related disciplines. The Wolfsonian has been a member since the mid-1990s and is currently the only one south of Washington, D.C., and east of Mexico City.

ARIAH representatives will hold a business meeting at The Wolfsonian on November 16. The remaining days will be spent introducing representatives to some of Greater Miami’s leading cultural institutions and art collections. The itinerary will include visits to the Kampong, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and Miami Art Central. In addition, prominent art collectors Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz and Ruth and Marvin Sackner have invited ARIAH representatives to visit their private collections.

“Miami offers so many important and unique art collections and other cultural resources, both public and private, that it was enormously difficult to select just a few places for the ARIAH group to visit,” commented Cathy Leff, The Wolfsonian’s director. “But we believe that this itinerary will offer our fellow ARIAH members a good sense of the city’s vibrant cultural past, present, and future.”

Members of ARIAH include the American Academy in Rome; Freer and Sackler Galleries (Smithsonian); Frick Collection and Art Reference Library; Getty Research Institute; Metropolitan Museum of Art; National Gallery of Canada; Smithsonian American Art Museum Art; and Yale Center for British Art.

Each fall ARIAH holds its meeting at one of the member institutions; past meetings have been held at Harvard’s Villa i Tatti in Florence, the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts in Washington, and the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas in Mexico City.
